In between the majestic ancient mountain ranges of the Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg lies the Local Municipality of Madibeng. Madibeng means the place of water. Within this area are the Haartbeespoort Dam, Rooikoppies Dam, Vaalkopdam and the Klipvoor Dam, all of which contribute to the area in terms of tourism, agriculture and manufacturing.

The jurisdictional area of the Local Municipality of Madibeng extends over an area of 3 814km and is situated in the North west province, 60km from Rustenburg and 50km north of Pretoria. It is strategically located in relation to Gauteng, Pietersburg, Harare and the Maputo Harbour and is positioned on the Heritage route linking the World heritage site with the Pilanesburg and Madikwe game reserves. The area encompasses a significant multinational presence of industrial concerns, with a strong global export presence. Madibeng is characterised by a remarkably rich and varied cultural resource base with an estimated population of 419 681 people. Of this population an estimated 93% form part of the previously disadvantaged groups (PDI) which indicates the need for stimulating development in the rural areas, focusing on human resource development and strengthening the linkages within neighbouring Economies.
